The Expert's Blog - How Entrepreneurs Blog for Profits [Part 2]

An 'Expert's Blog' (as defined by award winning Internet marketing expert, Bill Sweetman, a graduate of my Millionaires In Training Program for Entrepreneurs), is of a very professional nature, completely business focused not a personal blog. I would add that this blog showcases your 'expertise' and creates the environment that positions YOU as the 'THE Expert' in your field. This type of blogging represents your collected thoughts, opinions, ideas and expertise of an individual's subject matter (articles, or posts, as they are called in the blogging world), much like a newspaper column.

Topics To Write About

  • Full articles about your expertise on a variety of topics
  • Commentary on an article from another professional, while providing a link to that article
  • You can analyze successful people and provide professional commentary
  • Provide five or ten tips on a particular topic in one blog, or create individual blogs with one tip per blog and invite readers back for the next tip on the next blog
  • You can interview successful people and use that as a blog
  • You can share information from other websites
  • You can answer frequently asked questions (one question and one answer per blog)

The length of each blog is wide-open, but short and sweet is ideal (100 words); however, if posting an article as a blog, 300-500 words is appropriate.

You can also write blogs in advance if the material is not time-sensitive, and load it onto your blog site to be posted in any time-period you choose.

Components Needed
(Source: Bill Sweetman)

Must haves:

  1. Blog Name: stand alone brand/identity, a memorable name/tag line specifically for the blog.
  2. Blog URL: register unique website/domain name with your blog.
  3. Short descriptive paragraph (an 'about this blog' approx. 25 word description) not a bio, but what the blog is about.
  4. List of topics you specialize in (key words) and what you?re going to write about/have written about (categories).
  5. Professional photo.
  6. Professional bio.
  7. Full contact information (including other websites if you have them).
  8. Booking information for speaking engagements (a special 'attention media' link).
  9. A list of all upcoming and previous speaking engagements.
  10. Electronic copies of articles previously written.
  11. RSS subscriber feed/reader (www.feedburner.com).
  12. Copyright notice.

Nice to have:

  1. Internal search engine (so people can search directly on your blog pages).
  2. Email subscriber mechanism (email updates for your blog).
  3. Blog Roll - a tool to refer people to other professional blogs (10 or less).

Avoid:

  • Running ads (pay per click), focus on content for search engines to drive traffic, keep it professional.
  • No personal content like personal photos, or personal comments, etc.
  • Too many graphics, banners, colors don't junk the site up and make it too busy (remember the KISS principle: keep it simple silly!).

How To Get A Blog Built/Created

Recommended: Use a self-serve blogging tool www.typepad.com or www.blogger.com or use a search engine to research any number of available sites/products). Self-serve blogging is a quick and inexpensive way to create and run your own blog. An average blog tool account generally runs under $10/month. They are simple and easy to set-up; complete details and instructions are provided on these sites.

Or, you can use a web designer to create your site, but this is more expensive and time consuming.

So get out there and jump into the blogging pond. Don't be apprehensive; the benefits are huge. What you receive for the minimal costs and short time commitment can result in exceptional rewards: tons of traffic to your blog, new customers, increased sales, media banging on your door for interviews and speaking engagements. Go ahead, take the plunge, it won't hurt!
